Communication and Special Projects Assistant

 

Summary of Position:

 

This position is responsible for providing communication and project management, support and assistance to IU Center for Environmental Health staff for projects and activities including community relations, event planning, newsletters, news releases, and content development and design.

The intern will gain valuable experience in many aspects of communication planning, development, and implementation.  The internship also will provide the student with exposure to nonprofits, business leaders, and IUPUI faculty which may prove valuable for future career opportunities.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

-         Work with staff to research, gather information, and assist in the development of communication instruments such as e-newsletters and website updates.

-         Manage small projects within a defined scope, quality, time, and resource constraint.

-         Participate in event-related planning sessions and committee meetings.

-         Assist with event registration and coordination with event participants, sponsors, and speakers.

-         Assist in the maintenance of databases and contact information.

-        Assist in the set-up and preparation for meetings.

-        Respond to inquiries from the public and provide information about the organization.

-        Perform other duties as required.

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

 

-        Good communication and organizational skills.

-         Be a current IUPUI student pursuing a degree and in good standing with Business, Communication, Public Relations, Public Affairs, Event Management, Liberal Arts, or related disciplines.

-        Ability to communicate effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of an audience.

-         Proficient in the use of email, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point, databases, web browsers and on-line forms.

-        Familiar with basic principles of graphic design and visual communication, publication planning, or publication layout.

-        Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work independently.

-        Ability to operate calculators, computers, copy and fax machines.

-        Ability/willingness to learn new tasks and software programs as required.

-         Ability to collaborate and participate effectively within a team.

-        Self-directed and comfortable with a high degree of flexibility.

 

Hours and Salary:

 

The Intern will work on-site at the IU Center for Environmental Health, 980 W. Walnut St., for 15-20 hours/week.  Salary will be between $10-12 per hour, depending on skills and experience.
